PROJECT NUMBER: 25/026
PROJECT TITLE: Mapping Market Opportunities for Repurposed Mine Waste
CLIENT: MRIWA
DISCIPLINE: Economics, Industrial Engineering, Sustainability Studies, Mining Engineering
SUPERVISOR: Dr Cristina Vulpe
PROJECT TYPE: Full or 3/4 – Final Year Research Project. HDR Placement students may also apply.
STUDENTSHIP: $10,125 – $16,200 (depending on project type)
DEADLINE: Tuesday 18th February via https://ceed.wa.edu.au/prospective-scholars/apply-now/
DESCRIPTION:
Background: With the growing emphasis on sustainability and circular economy initiatives, it is crucial to identify viable markets for repurposed mining waste products. The current lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the market landscape, potential applications, and economic feasibility of these products hinders progress. By conducting a market analysis in Western Australia, this project aims to unearth opportunities that valorise mining waste and align with the mineral sector’s shift towards circularity.
Challenge: There is a notable deficiency in market insight surrounding repurposed mineral waste products, coupled with limited users’ awareness of their benefits and applications. Additionally, economic viability and potential regulatory hurdles pose challenges to market development. Gaining insight into the market potential and economic feasibility of repurposed products within Western Australia is essential for driving industry engagement and innovation.
Output: The project will produce a focused market analysis report that includes the following:
– A review of one or two successful case studies showcasing effective repurposing of mining waste.
– Key survey results to identify market needs and preferences.
– Recommendations for engaging stakeholders and promoting awareness of the advantages of repurposed materials.
– Presentation materials that summarise findings.
The students are expected to collaborate with the other two related MRIWA’s CEED research projects.
The student will work under the guidance of MRIWA.
